Creating Outdoor Spaces

The weather has been warm for some time now here in the Carolinas so I just wanted to share one of my favorite things about summer -- my outdoor space!

I live in an apartment where I am fortunate enough to have a great balcony outside my living room. Unfortunately it also faces a parking structure so the view isn`t all that appealing by itself. That being said, I wanted to create a great outdoor space that was not only beautiful but relaxing too.

I`ve always loved gardening so the first thing I did was buy some window planters for the black railing. I filled them with some of my favorites - dusty miller, salvia, bacopa, and a few other interesting plants I found at the nursery. Just for fun I also planted a blueberry plant (not pictured) that is still rather small but hopefully will produce next year.

My pride and joy however, is my Madison Confederate Jasmine. The vine has dark green glossy leaves (like small magnolia leaves) and tiny white star shaped flowers that emerge in the spring and smell AMAZING. The Madison version is also a little more cold hardy and made it through the winter her just fine.

The bistro table and chairs/cushions are actually from Cost Co and were under $100 all together! I love sitting out with a cup of coffee in the morning when it is still cool and quiet.
Ive tried a few options for sun shades to block some of the hot afternoon sun but havent found one I liked yet. Ill also be adding some pillows to the chairs so I can lean back and relax but Im extraordinarily picky and havent found ones I love yet.

Do you have an outdoor space? How did you decorate?
