Headquarters of the oldest university of Portugal, Coimbra is mainly enlivened by students living and studying here, but is also full of monuments and historical treasures and has a busy commerce and vibrant presence of the Mondego, the "River Poets" as locals call it proudly, offering visitors the beauty of its banks and feeding the fertile fields of the surrounding valley. Coimbra has many sites to explore and an extensive calendar of cultural events and entertainment, but it is especially lively in May, when students celebrate the end of the academic year with the traditional burning of the ribbons, filling the streets with music and animation bubbling.
It is not beautiful?
