Firstly, I have not had a Pizzelle in SUCH a long time, so this was quite the treat. My mothers friends mother was Italian (shes since passed) but for Easter and Christmas EVERY SINGLE YEAR she would make homemade Italian Pizzelle cookies. What is a pizzelle? Its an Italian cookie, but its a thin waffle cooked cookie. You literally put like a tablespoon of batter onto the pizzelle maker (which is very similar to a waffle iron), close it, and let it cook. You have to watch it closely because they will burn up in the blink of an eye.
I like Pizzelles because they are very light, thin and airy. The negative aspect with that is you can eat a whole lot more than expected. I personally like to eat fresh ones with a tiny bit of powdered sugar sprinkled on them. But these ones that I purchased from the store? I just eat them out of the package because theyre chocolate flavored. You can really taste the cocoa in them, which is nice. Typically pizzelles are made in vanilla, caramel, chocolate, anise, and original. I enjoy all of the flavors, except the anise I can only have one before I am overwhelmed but thats only because I am not a fan of anise flavoring or liquorish in general.
I purchased these at the store for $2.69 and there was 5 packages of cookies in there, but before I got around to photographing them they were eaten up.
Have you ever had a pizzelle?
