Caramel Macchiato - My Way

My favorite drink to get at Starbucks is the Caramel Macchiato but since spending $4 a day on coffee just isn`t practical for my budget I`ve started making my own at home and splurging just once a week on the real thing. I find that Starbucks` version (which is technically a Caramel Latte Macchiato) can be a little weak for my taste so when I make my own I do things a little different.

First, I use a stovetop moka pot to make my espresso. The trick here is to use the lowest heat setting possible for the best (and strongest) flavor.

Next, I mix 1/2 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vanilla torani syrup (this is half of what most recipes call for) then heat and froth the milk with a handheld frother. Unfortunately, I`ve tried espresso machines with the steam nozzle for milk but I could never get the milk quite right that way.

I use a drizzle of caramel sauce on top of the milk and then pour my espresso straight through the middle! I love that the espresso sits on top for a little bit before sinking in and mixing with the other ingredients. That first sip of bitter espresso and sweet caramel is my favorite!
