We`ve all become far to us to having Call of Duty churned out to us year after year. All that would change is the `paint job` but we`d still have the same game we already payed for.
Treyarch, who last brought us Call of Duty Black Ops, have decided to go a different route with Black Ops 2.
The single player part of the game will be set in two different time periods. One half in the 1970`s and 80`s while the other will be set in 2025. Alex Mason, the protagainst from Black Ops, will return for the Cold War era proxy wars, while in the future setting will be Alex`s son, David Mason.
Known areas that Alex will be fighting in are Central America and the parts of Afghanistan invaded by the Soviets during the Cold War. #Spoiler# Alex`s friend from Black Ops, Frank Woods, who we thought dead returns to narrate the games story into the 2025 setting. End Spoiler#
In the future setting of the game, the world is in a new Cold War. It`s a stand off between China and America. China has banned the export of rare earth elements, following a cyberattack on the Chinese Stock exchange that cribbles them.
In a world where war is fought behind a computer monitor using cyberwarfare, unmanned drones and robotics instead of in the field, an hacking attack on Americas drones have caused them to go rogue.
The person behind the cyber attacks on both nations is, Raul Menendez, who wants both nations to have a full scale war with each other. It`s not known yet why Menendez wants a war but he is doing his very best to get one.
After taking over all of Americas drones he sends half of them to Shangai in China, and the other half to attack cities around the US.
In the first mission we`re shown, you start as David Mason who is trying to defend the president as they are under attack from these rogue drones.
The real beauty of Black Ops 2 is not that it`s the first Call of Duty game set in the future but that is has braching story lines and multiple endings to the game. These braching story lines are done through `Strike Force Missions`, where your choice affects how the whole game plays out.
Strike force missions are special missions that once picked lock you out of other missions in the game. You play as a different character, who can use drones, jet fighters
and robots to to assist you in the Strike force missions. The difference between the main campagin and these side missions are that if you die, that character remains dead for the rest of the story. You jump right back to the main story line. This could even affect the outcome of Menendez`s plans. By the end of the game you may have changed the results of the new Cold War or failed to have stopped it. Either way, you will be shown what could have been.
This adds so much replay value to a game that you could only play once and be bored of it a second time around. This is what Treyarch are doing to save the Call of Duty franchise and it make`s me want to play Call of Duty again.
Another feature Treyarch have become famous for with their Call of Duty games is of course the Zombie mode. This time instead of just trying to survive for as long as you can, there is a main story line to follow. This will make for a more interesting game instead of seening how long you can last. Treyarch have also said that the new zombie mode will feature 8 player co-op instead of the usual 4 player co-op.
Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is looking amazing and ready to pump some life back into a stale franchise. It is set for release on the 13th of November 2012. It will be released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Microsoft Windows, the Wii and the Wii U.
