As many of you know there is homophobia in sports. Brian Fautley is a varsity volleyball player who came out to his team and told them about his sexual orientation. In April 2010 after he had casually homophobic comments made towards him after his annoucement to the team, he decided to quit the team, but was later convinced to return by team mates and his coach. The attitude of the team had taken a 180 degree turn and they were genuinely interested in him being gay and accepting of his sexuality. He said that "the homophobic comments from teammates that bothered him so much weren`t coming from hatred, but rather a typical athletic culture." The change in attitude has made it easier for him and one of his team mates Anthony Galonski who is also gay. Their team has always done well but hit new heights this season winning an Ontario title and finishing 4th in the national championships they hosted.
Do you think there is homophobia in sports?
Do you think there should be stricter rules in schools against the sort of behavior his team mates exhibited when he came out?
