Next on my list of must see buildings of North Carolina is Bodie Island Lighthouse. The one on Bodie Island today is actually the 3rd such lighthouse. The Lighthouse is located just south of Nags Head and stands at 156 feet (roughly 48 meters). It was built back in 1872 and has remained active ever since. The lighthouse keeper`s duplex house near the lighthouse has been converted into a museum and visitor`s center which contains a bookstore, articles about the lighthouse`s history, and items from the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper`s duplex. Over the years the lighthouse has received many upgrades to it`s lenses and lights, such as replacing its older incandescent lights with brighter more luminescent Halogen lights. However the lighthouse building itself had never really received any updating or repair beside the occasional paint job and filling in a crack on the siding. As such the Lighthouse soon became unclimbable and many of it`s interior and exterior parts had become very degraded. All this is changing now as a much delayed complete restoration of the lighthouse has been underway since 2010. After a few snags with the restoration funding during this time, in 2012 the restoration work was fully resumed. The restoration will be replacing the old iron parts of the lighthouse such as the stairs inside, all the window frames, the the leans house tower railing and supports, and the tower cap. Masonry repair had been needed for many years and it is also being fix/restored. Because of all this restoration work going on the lighthouse has been temporarily powered down and is not accessible to the public. The housekeeper`s duplex museum IS still open however, for now as it will be receiving a restoration of its own after the lighthouse`s restoration is complete. The lighthouse is expected to reopen to the public in 2013. So if you`re looking for a nice lighthouse to visit with plenty of history then come to the Bodie Island Lighthouse... although it`s best to wait till 2013 :p
