I`m a huge fan of college football and I was very excited yesterday to see that when the Big Ten conference announced its awards, they named Bill O`Brien as Coach of the Year! It`s a huge honor and is particularly fitting because O`Brien was a brand new coach this year in the Big Ten (he transferred to college football from the NFL - he helped coach the New England Patriots) and he faced filling a tremendous void - he replaced the one and only Joe Paterno at Penn State.
So much press has been written about Penn State within the past year that it`s really difficult to begin explaining how great it is that Penn State still has a good football season (they went 8-4) and that numerous players have taken home conference awards, some will take home national awards, and that the head coach is now Coach of the Year for the B1G conference! I think it`s a great way to show that the school really is capable of bouncing back from all the negative media attention. Also, it shows that the school and the football program can still survive and survive well without Joe Paterno. I`m a huge JoePa fan and it was devastating to see him go, but it`s a very good feeling knowing that the football program at Penn State is still going strong even without him there.
Coach O`Brien definitely deserves this award, particularly because of the difficulties of this past year, and it`s great that he`s getting recognition like this :)
