Hitting the beach with a full face of make-up is not cool. But neither is stepping out of the sea red-faced with salt-chapped lips. For the ideal beach face think Daryl Hannah in Splash - contoured cheeks and softly defined eyes. This calls for waterproof make-up, but happily the days of thick, caking products are gone. Today`s products are soft, sheer and subtle.
First stop: mascara. Apply Estee Lauder`s Sumptuous Bold Volume Waterproof mascara (£19.50, 0870 034 2566) for long, thick lashes that won`t smudge. Also, the brown tone looks less `done` than black.
You don`t have to ditch your blusher, either. Becca`s Beach Tint (£20, http://beccacosmetics.com ) has cult status among beach-goers as it provides a natural-looking post-swim flush.
This is a relaxed look, so avoid lipstick. Revlon`s Just Bitten Kissable (£7.99, http://boots.com ) adds a little colour and lasting moisture to protect from chlorine and salt. Find a shade just darker than your natural lip colour, and apply without the need of a mirror. The effortless beach look can really be effortless.
