You think those large boats of sushi they serve at your local Japanese restaurant is fancy? Well, that means you have not seen these laser-cut sushi rolls yet. These intricate designs on nori, or seaweed, were created by Japanese ad agency I&S BBDO to help Umino Seaweed boost sales after the 2011 tsunami.
I don`t know why this is the first thing I`ve learned about it, but the intricate, laser-cut designs have been completely amazed. It is great that the agency decided to go with beautiful designs versus cover the nori with obnoxious branding. That would not be as appealing to me. In fact, I would think it were downright cheap.
Five designs were introduced: Sakura (Cherry Blossoms), Mizutama (Water Drops), Asanoha (Hemp), Kikkou (Turtle Seashell), Kumikkou (Tortoise Shell). I have attached some photos above. I wonder if this will catch on. I do have a feeling it would make the price of sushi skyrocket though..... And if I did order it with the beautiful nori I don`t know if I could bring myself to eat it!
