Today I saw the drama movie Beasts of the Southern Wild. This movie stars Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry and it is nominated for 4 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress. Quvenzhané is only 9 years old and she is the youngest actress to ever receive a nomination for an Academy Award.
Hushpuppy is a 6 year old girl living with her father in the Bathtub which is a community isolated from the civilization. Hushpuppy and the few members of the community live an unhealthy life in the marshes, with a poor diet, living in tents, eating raw food and drink way too much alcohol.
Hushpuppys father, Dwight, is sick and he has some major mood swings but teaches her to be strong.
When the community is threatened by a huge storm that will make the water rise and sink all of their houses, most of the members of the Bathtub leave the community, but Hushpuppy and her father manage to survive the storm and they try to see if anyone else survived.
The Bathtub community doesnt really exist but it is inspired in some isolated communities in Louisiana.
Ill be honest, I didnt like the movie that much. Hushpuppys fathers mood swings are nerve wracking and nothing really interesting happened during the whole movie, at least in my opinion, but I was amazed to see how simple they were and Hushpuppy, being so little managed to survive almost all by herself. Despite that, I do think Quvenzhané did an amazing job with the role she played.
I give this movie a 5 out of 10 (5/10).
