Next on my tour of must see buildings of North Carolina is The Basilica of St. Lawrence. Located in Asheville, North Carolina The Basilica of St. Lawrence is the most famous Catholic Church in the entire state and is considered one of the most beautiful. Built in 1905 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, The Basilica of St. Lawrence also has the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America. As with most Catholic churches the church is open to the public even during church services on Sundays. So it`s possible to come and marvel at this church any time of the year although they do ask you to stay respectful of the church and not take any pictures without permission and to keep voices down in case people are there to pray. There are also guided tours and self guided tour available. As for the sanctuary there are several statues including St. Lawrence, St. Cecilia, St. Rose of Lima, St. Patrick, and St. Peter the Apostle. The Crucifix behind the pulpit is the 2nd largest in North Carolina. It had been the largest for many years until a bigger Catholic Church was built in Charlotte not to long ago. Its stain-glass windows are said to be some of the most intricate and beautiful in the entire state out of any Christian denomination in North Carolina. So If you`re looking to have a vacation in Asheville, North Carolina or just passing through, be sure to stop by The Basilica of St. Lawrence. It would make for an interesting and unique stop for your sightseeing pleasure.
