Basic Steamed Bun and Recipe

This is some steamed buns I made today. It`s just plain steamed buns which you can also call mantou. It has no filling but it doesn`t mean you can`t put filling in it. This was my first time making it and it came out pretty good. The whole batch which came out to be around 15 big buns was all gone within the end of the day. So let me share this recipe with you.


2 Tbsp yeast
1/4 Cup warm water
3 tsp sugar

1 Cup sugar
4-5 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 Tbsp baking powder

Put the yeast, sugar in a small bowl and pour the warm water in. Set aside till forthy.

To make the dough in a big mixing bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Mix it abit. Next add the yeast mixture. Then add the water and the amounts vary. Just add enough water till it forms into a dough, I would say around 1 to 1 1/2 cups, add a little at a time. Then knead and keep kneading until when pulled the forms a thin film and doesn`t break apart that easily, around 10 to 15 min. Then set the dough aside and let rise for around 1hr or more until doubled in size. After rising, break dough into pieces and form a ball and put onto squares cut from parchment paper. Then let rise again for around 15 min before steaming. Stem for 15-20 min and let cool a little and serve.
