Standing in at under 200 pages, I finished Dai Sijies novel in two days. I found this book to be really interesting to read. It was a story of two boys in 1970s rural China. They had been sent from the city, along with hundreds of other young people, to be re-educated in the ways of the peasants at Chairman Maos command.
The boys struggle with their new lives, until chance brings them into contact with a beautiful village girl and a treasure trove of banned books. Never having been exposed to the ideas in the novels, the teens find themselves in an emotional upheaval, doing and thinking things they hadnt before.
The thing I liked best about this story was the new environment to which it exposed me. I had never learned about the Cultural Revolution in school, so this was really eye-opening.
Sijies descriptions are also really great. I found myself understanding how the characters felt emotionally and physically. I think hes a great storyteller. I would recommend this book to others.
