Nearing the end....
Next to last on my tour of must visit beaches of North Carolina brings us to Bald Head Island. Located in Brunswick County, Bald Head Island is one of the most sparsely populated islands of all the Outer Banks. So the beaches are are incredibly remote and secluded. Most famous for having the oldest still standing lighthouse on the NC Coast built back in 1817, "Old Baldy." (Picture 3) The Cape Fear Lighthouse had replaced Old Baldy in 1889, although now it has been demolished. Fishing, boat charters, small cottage inns, and the 18 hole golf course are about the only businesses here since the island is small and sparsely populated. However that`s what makes this island such a great vacation spot. It`s the best place to get away from all the busy beaches and resorts that occupy most of the other beaches in the area and along the Outer Banks. And like Ocracoke Island the only access to the island is by ferry or by private boat. Fishing is great around the area and the surfing is said to be terrific. There are only 2 campgrounds on the island, but they do offer several picnic areas and a couple of small hiking trails and a 2 biking trails. The beaches on the island are also open year round. So If you`re looking for a very secluded beach to spend your vacations then Bald Head Island is the best place to come.
