Next on my tour of must visit beaches of North Carolina brings me to my personal favorite, Atlantic Beach. Located in Carteret County both the beach and the town next to it share the same name. But it`s also been given a nice name, The Crystal Coast. You can tell you`ve reached the right place by the the town`s famous light blue water tower with its name on the side (4th pic). There`s a lot I can tell you about this beach but I`ll try and make it short. First off the beach has some great white sandy shorelines and the famous Atlantic Beach pier. The Pier sadly was heavily damaged during Hurricane Irene last year and is currently close as they rebuild the destroyed parts. But when they do it`s one of the top places in all the state for offshore and beach fishing. Surfing and boogie boarding are very good around the area as the part of the Outer Banks it`s a part of make a semi circle into the Atlantic ocean causing some of the Gulf stream to be trapped and build onto the shore making for some great waves. There`s also several museums in the area showing both nature, artistic and historical items. Most famously is Fort Macon. The oldest fort on the North Carolina Coast (sort of). It was built just before the Revolutionary war but wasn`t finished until the War of 1812. I`ll post more about the Fort on a later date in another post dedicated to it. Also in the area is an 18 hole Golf Course well known for it`s great views of the beach and Money Island Bay. The beaches are open year round and there are many vacation homes along the beach, many of which can be rented out. Although there are several hotels as well. And with Morehead City just across the Bay night life around the beach can be quite busy. Atlantic Beach also has one of the largest Marina bays in the state and thousand of visitors come by boat to the area. Another famous attraction of the beach is that the island is home to one of a few remaining wild horse herds on the Outer Banks (picture 3). So if you get to see any on the island count yourself lucky!
So if you`re looking for some great Family Fun or Fun for yourself then Atlantic Beach is the bast spot on all the North Carolina Coast to find it. So please go and try Atlantic Beach! I promise you`ll have the time of your life there!
