Yep! I did it again another dinner for TWO but this time for $19 (including tax & tip)! My boyfriend and I went out to dinner at a local Cuban restaurant celebrate our anniversary. Well, actually, it was a bit of an all day thing. We headed up to the city we first met in (where he used to live) and went for a walk, enjoyed some coffee, visited some of his friends where he used to live, then went to a spot we used to play pool in, did a quick pass through Marshalls to kill some time and then when we were hungry enough for dinner headed off to the restaurant. Neither of us had eaten at this spot before so it was a brand new experience, but it was a really good one!
To start we were given a plate with warm, fresh bread slices (we ate some before I took the photo) that had a mild onion flavor to it with dipping oil. The oil itself was very good, flavored with garlic and herbs.
For dinner we ordered the following:
Premium Mambo. This was my meal. I was in a toss up between two different dishes and after speaking with the waitress she suggested I not get the pork because since it was a loin she said it could tend to be drier, so I opted for the chicken premium mambo. The dish came with a mound of roasted chicken which was served with white rice, black beans and mixed vegetables (which I requested to just be steamed w/ no butter on them). Originally the meal was to come with sweet plantains instead of veggies, but they did not have any sweet so I was able to substitute my side.
Chicken Wing Platter. My boyfriends dish. Originally he wanted steak, but upon getting there he opted for chicken wings since he hasnt had them in a long while. His dish came with a ton of chicken wings and French fries. The waitress gave him a list of sauces he could toss the wings in so he went with his classic choice: buffalo.
Side: Tostones (Green Plantains). Tostones are fried green bananas. I wanted these. I have not had tostones in a long while and was hoping theyd be good. I find with tostones if you dont cook them to order and serve right away they are just, yuck. But these? They were FABULOUS. I absolutely loved these. They were cut perfectly, the right consistency and fried to perfection.
After placing our order for our meals, the waitress brought out a large bowl of tossed garden salad, saying with our entrees we got the salad to go along with it. I was surprised because I didnt even know salad was part of the meal. The salad had romaine lettuce, red onion, and tomato and was topped with roasted red pepper slices and olives which was served along a balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
Our food was VERY good, definitely some of the best weve had. Were already planning on going back another time. I ended up bringing more than half of my food home because I was so stuffed and ended up eating the rest for dinner today. Since I follow Weight Watchers, I did weigh the chicken I had leftover and JUST my leftover chicken weighed 6.5 ounces. That just shows me that this restaurant definitely gives you what you pay for since most restaurants tend to max out their meats (primarily chicken) at 3-5 ounces.
Now youre probably wondering how we got all this food for $19 (including tax & tip)? Well, I went on http://Restaurant.com and searched the local restaurants and my boyfriend and I decided on the particular one we went to. This day (as almost every day) http://Restaurant.com was hosting a deal with a promo code where you could pay $2 for a $25 gift card! So thats exactly what we did. The only stipulation with http://Restaurant.com gift cards are that each restaurant has their own rules some dont allow you to eat Friday & Saturday using the card, most have a stipulation that you purchase either 2entrees OR spend a particular amount of money (generally $35 on $25 gift cards), finally a lot of the restaurants that participate request that an 18% gratuity be tacked on which isnt bad particularly if you are going at night.
So there you have it, my anniversary dinner for two that did NOT hurt our wallets!
