Alert: Closest City to the North Pole

Information and picture from wikipedia

Alert,Nunavut, Canada.

Alert is named after HMS Alert, a British ship which wintered about 10 km (6.2 mi) away in 187576.

It is only 817 kilometres (508 mi) from the North Pole.

it hosts a military signals intelligence radio receiving facility at Canadian Forces Station Alert (CFS Alert), as well as a co-located Environment Canada weather station, a Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) atmosphere monitoring laboratory, and the Alert Airport.

Alert has a polar climate. This means it is very cold and, on average, has snow cover for 10 months of the year. The warmest month, July, has an average temperature of just 3.3 °C (37.9 °F).

According to DND`s own website on CFS Alert, the `population` is around 70 personnel. Combine that with the 6 folks who apparently appeared on the Census and you still have a settlement of less than 100 people.

Alert Canada: named after a British ship, closest to the north pole, military signals intelligence radio, poor climate, and less then 100 people. What a cold and quite place to live in!
