The Australian Open, is the first Grand Slam tournament of the year 2012, and it will officially begin next Monday, January 16th.

Michelle Larcher de Brito and Maria João Koehler, the two Portuguese players top-rated, added victories in games like that have earned them access to the second round of qualifying for the Australian Open in tennis.

Michelle Larcher de Brito, with 18 years old is currently the player number 148 of the ATP world ranking. She defeated the german Kathrin Woerle in two sets by 6-3 and 7-5, respectively.

Maria João Koehler, the tennis player number 222 of the women's world ranking of the sport, won with some surprise, after 2 hours and 51 minutes of play, the opponent was the japanese Misaki Doi. She won in three sets, the partial 4-6, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), and in the final set, 8-6.
