To nobody's surprise Indians closer, Kerry Wood, is expected to start the 2010 season on the 60 day disabled list. Wood's strained latissimus muscle was revealed on an MRI Thursday, after the pitcher complained of pain and soreness in his right shoulder.
Lonnie Soloff, the Indians head athletic trainer, described the injury as "recurring moderate strain." He also went on to explain Wood experiences similar soreness every Spring Training.
It is well known that Kerry Wood is mainly a second half pitcher, as he spends most of the first half of a season getting healthy. But is that type of liability worth it?
On the bright side, the Indians have already found the replacement for Kerry Wood. Chris Perez, a young hard-throwing 23 year old will assume the duties of the injured Wood.
Perez has had an impressive career thus far. In the 98 2/3 innings he has pitched, Perez fanned 110 batters. Perez is also regarded by many to be an extremely mature pitcher considering his age. Manager Manny Acta praised Perez - "He's got the solid makeup to do it. He's the type who can blow off the bad games."
With the benefit of two more weeks of Spring Training, Perez is expected to be more than ready for the role. "The kid has always dreamed of being a closer, and now he gets his opportunity." - said Acta.
But the biggest problem here is the fact Kerry Wood is more than likely going to be on the disabled list yet again. That would make it his 13th trip to the DL in his 12 year career. Kerry Wood is a worriesome investment. His career has been filled with a multitude of injuries and he has proven once again, he cannot stay healthy.
If Perez handles his new role well, the Indians should keep him as their closer. Even after Kerry Wood is "healthy". Let's face it, when Wood is healthy he can be one of the most dominant pitchers in the MLB. But unfortunately we've only been able see glimpses of his greatness and it appears we will only continue to
see his abilities in brief flashes.
