So when I first started cheerleading in high school I was the little girl that students watched at pep rallys just to laugh at because my jumps were PATHETIC! When I say pathetic imagine a little kid jumping 2 inches in the air and spreading her legs an inch, yeaaahhh. But now here I am a UCA All-American cheerleader with I would say pretty good jumps. I loved reading peoples opinions on how to get my jumps better because it motivated me to work harder on them so now I'm giving you a little a motivation. Yes you little girl who jumped like me, you can and will be able to jump like a pro ;)
Tips:
-I know most people already know this but if you stretch everyday your jumps WILL improve. I know its a pain to do it everyday but hey if you want them you'll work for em' right?
-Ankle weights, I hear all the time how it's bad for your knees but I've never complained and I have some pretty bad joints. I wont suggest you trying them if you know they'll hurt you but it will dramaticall improve your jumps!
-Practice makes perfect :) Do your jumps atleast ten times a day. You might feel a little discouraged the first week but after a while you and the rest of the student body who laughed at you like they did me will notice to!
-This rule applies for herkies and front hurdlers. CHEAT! I know I know that horrible but usually peoples kicks are much better than their jumps soooo if your doing a right herkie kick the right leg up then swing your left leg back. I know it sounds complicated but its not. Thats how I started and now my body is used to bringing my leg that high when I jump.
-When doing herkies make sure to practice BOTH legs EQUALLY!! I had the hardest time with toe touches because one leg wass wayyy higher than the other! VERY AWKWARD!
-Lastly, this may not be a tip for you but a lot of girls on my squad rotate their hips when they do toetouches. As you start getting higher on your jumps focus on rotating your hips. When you do your kicks is an another way to practice on rotating. Kick you leg across your body to get your body used to rotating.
I hope this helped && feel free to comment if you would like to add any more ways that can help someone in need :)
