CLARIFICATION:
Fine hair and thinning hair are two different things. The picture above features products that can assist with either or both issues. People who have fine hair have thin strands of hair and not very many of them. When they scoop their hair back with an elastic, the ponytail won’t be very thick.
People with thinning hair could suffer from a reducing hairline or a thinning crown, which means bald patches may begin to show through or you may begin to notice sparse areas on your scalp where not a lot of hair is growing.
While some of the above products work to help improve both issues, it’s important to know which category you fall into before you attempt to treat it to ensure that you’re definitely using the right products to get the best results.
What is your best tip for battling thinning hair or treating fine hair? Do you have a product or style that works for you?

There are a lot of beauty brands out there (we have over 400 on beautyheaven and that’s not even the tip of the iceberg). So many in fact, that it’s almost impossible to know them all. And even more impossible to know what each brands’ products are like.
Which is exactly why we came up with the Discovery Bag – a nifty little package that contains products from brands that you may never
have heard of before. We send off said Discovery Bag to a few members who road-test and review the products. It’s a situation where everybody wins – the testers get to try out fabulous new products, while the rest of the beautyheaven community gets to learn about them.
So here’s what our members had to say about this round of Discovery Bag products – a bunch of natural, effective, and totally drool-worthy products:
Dr. Pratt’s Body Butter
WE SAY:
The ultra-rich moisturiser contains nourishing ingredients like almond oil, macadamia oil, natural glycerine and pure honey beeswax. Add to that the beautiful fragrances, and you’ve got one fabulous body moisturiser.
YOU SAY:
“The texture is a thick-ish whipped formulation, which makes it easy to get the right amount for each application. I really dislike the greasy feeling body butters leave on my skin however this product disappears almost immediately and leaves my skin feeling soft and silky for the whole day.” – Jacq
“The scent is to die for...so rich and not overpowering at all. I tried the scent French Lily and Honeysuckle, which is a lovely flowery scent. This body butter also works as a quick "pick me up" freshener because of its lovely scent. I sometimes use it as a cream perfume putting it on my pulse points for the lovely fragrance.” – MoonlightSak

Instead, it is loaded with oils (sweet almond, apricot kernel, macadamia) and vitamin E, which is a refreshing change to the ingredients in most fragrances. This purity is evident in the natural scent of the product. I'm now keen to try the other scents in the range!”
– Chicklet
“I trialled the scent 'White Gardenia' which has heavenly floral notes. I found the complex fragrance notes developed with wear and it was long-lasting without smelling obnoxious. The scent is fresh and crisp, meaning that it's versatile for either night or day wear.” – chocolatelace

I've had this burning for a few days and it's made my house really homey. It tends to fill the whole lower level of my home with it's scent.” – softness
“I got the French Lily and Honeysuckle variation which smells absolutely heavenly! Upon lighting the candle, the delicious fragrance is released, and, thanks to the 12 per cent fragrance content, the candle has excellent scent throw. You can easily smell the fragrance even if you're burning this in a large, open area in the home. It's also pretty enough to have as an ornament around the home when you're not burning it.” – chocolatelace

“This is a lovely two in one product a lip balm and a tint. The Guava Lemonade has a pretty pink colour that looks quite natural on my lips.
It applies like a dream – nice and smooth and the great thing is the cocoa butter and coconut oil, which melts on my lips upon application.” – MoonlightSak

They may seem wholesome, but they may actually be tricking you
Healthy-foods-blueberry-yoghurt-raspberries_article_new
So, you’re on a health kick. You’ve upped your weekly exercise count, and your fridge is stocked full of nutritious foods that are doing more good than just making your tummy feel full. Or are they?
In today’s society, an abundance of foods are marketed as healthy,
low fat and low sugar, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually good for you. Oh, no. Now more than ever we need to be savvy about the foods we’re putting in our mouths and the labels on our foods.
In an attempt to educate us all, we’ve rounded up five foods most of us think are outrageously healthy, but are actually not. Yep, beware when you’re tucking into these tasty goodies, because they’re not always as nutritious as you thought…
NOT-SO-HEALTHY FOOD #1: yoghurt that contains fruit
Yes, the tub might say fat-free or low fat, but that doesn’t mean it’s super-healthy. Unfortunately, yoghurts containing fruit often contain added sugars, corn syrup or artificial sweeteners to compensate for the removal of said fat. It’s always best to check the label before you buy – or opt for a plain variety instead. If you’re not a fan of unflavoured yoghurt, add freshly cut fruit for natural sweetness hit instead.
NOT-SO-HEALTHY FOOD #2: salads from fast food outlets
You may think you’re making a healthy choice, but salads bought from fast food outlets or food courts are often laden with sugar-filled salad dressings, and croutons made from refined white flour. Either pack your own homemade salad if you have the chance, or opt for a protein-packed burger and ditch the bun.
NOT-SO-HEALTHY FOOD #3: vitamin-enriched water
Just because they’re marketed as water with extra nutritious benefits, don’t think you’re free to guzzle them down as you please. Although they sound genius in theory, and do give you a dose of much-needed vitamins, they come with a helping of sugar and basically empty calories, too. Opt for a daily multi-vitamin instead, and add slices of lemon or lime to water or soda water for a healthier – yet flavoursome – water alternative.
NOT-SO-HEALTHY FOOD #4: bran muffins
They’re certainly healthier than the chocolate chip versions, and are often made with health-conscious ingredients, but that’s not our concern. Our concern with bran muffins is portion size. Generally, bran muffins sold in cafes are twice the average serving size, so you’re taking in a lot more sodium, fat and sugar before you’ve even applied toppings such as butter or jam. The answer? Limit them, or share them.
NOT-SO-HEALTHY FOOD #5: baked beans
Yes, beans are packed with all-important fibre, but the bad traits of baked beans belong to its syrup – it’s full of sugar. This means eating them will result in a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels, which is never a good thing. Try red kidney beans or chick peas instead. They’re packed with fibre and protein, but sans the sugary liquid.
Were you under the impression these foods actually were healthy? Has reading this changed your perceptions of food marketed as healthy? How much attention do you pay to food labels?

Well, your big day came around quicker than you thought it would, didn’t it? Now I’m guessing your dress has been sorted since about a week after your engagement. Same with the venue. In fact, I’d bet my lipstick collection that you’ve got most of the details of your wedding all under control.
Most. Not all.
Like your nail polish for your wedding day. I bet you’ve been so busy
ironing out all of the big details that you forgot about your wedding day manicure. Well, luckily for you, we’ve narrowed down the thousands of neutral shades out there down to just a few hues that will show off your ring beautifully and won’t take the attention away from your gorgeous make-up, hair and dress.
Picture Polish in White Wedding
You can’t really go past a shade that has wedding in the title, can you? The slightly off-white shade will look great on those who have an olive complexion and it won’t look like you’re trying to match the white of your dress.
OPI Don’t Burst My Bubble from the Oz the Great and Powerful range
This light pinky shade is the perfect colour for the bride who wants a glossy manicure without looking like her nails have been painted at all. Understated and elegant.
ck one color Long Wear + Shine Nail Color in Romper Room
The brown-based colour of this nail polish is perfect for those who want a manicure that can be seen from a distance without being distracting or too much.
Max Factor Glossfinity in Opal
If you find that you often gravitate towards grey nail colours, then you might find this white/grey shade is the perfect wedding day hue. The high-gloss finish is the icing on the, err, wedding cake.
Bio Sculpture Gel nails in Ivory Beige
When it comes to wedding day nails, there are three things that every girl wants: the perfect shade, a chip-free finish and strong nourished nails. And that’s exactly what you’ll get with Bio Sculpture’s gel nails in Ivory Beige. The colour is just right, the finish will last for up to three weeks, and because it’s made from natural ingredients, it’ll care for your nails too!
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Shell We Dance
Who doesn’t love a gorgeous subtle pink? Wear it on your wedding day for some subtle oomph, or wear it as an everyday shade that won’t conflict with your day-to-day wardrobe.
Revlon ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel in Bare Bones
This nude polish is the kind of shade that’s probably better suited to those who have olive-based skin. Not only will it complement your skin tone, but it will work well with silver jewellery, too. Note: the colour is more nude than shown in the picture.
MeMeMe Nail Collection Long Lasting Gloss in Innocent
The shade name is kinda perfect for your wedding day, isn’t it? And really, you couldn’t get a better title for this shade – a soft, almost-nude pink that’ll be the perfect finishing touch to your wedding look.
Polished London Nail Enamel in Ballerina
There’s not much not to love about this ballerina-slipper-pink. It’s dainty and ladylike and won’t steal the show. It will, however, be oohed and aahed over as people fawn over your ring.
L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Le Vernis in Rose Paradise
This nail polish shade is almost as if nude and light pink had a perfect, neutral baby. But it won’t make your hands look washed out and insipid. Nope. Instead, it’ll give your nails that slightly done-up look that’s just what you’re looking for on your wedding day.
What’s your ideal wedding nail polish shade? Do you have a favourite neutral nail polish?

Review by Shah Taj
Kryolan is one of those brands which are widely available in Karachi but don't get enough love on beauty blogs (in my opinion). May be its the perception that its more of a theatrical make up brand (i don't know)
But i love kryolan products. The price is not too bad either.A few months back i was browsing the shelves at "Kryolan city" and randomly bought this stick
foundation for my sister (who at the time was looking for a full coverage foundation).
What Kryolan Says:
"Successfully proven cream make-up in stick form. The special base of TV Paint Stick allows gentle make-up application that provides effective covering at the same time. The Kryolan assortment of more than 250 color nuances for selection is truly extraordinary - which makes this preparation indispensable for stage, film, TV and video work."
My thoughts:
Even though i don't usually go for stick foundations, I did try this a few times. Its "full coverage" so there is minimum requirement for concealer after using this.Very emollient and easy to spread.I find that using a damp sponge to apply , does the job best.Because it is a cream foundation , (in my opinion) this will better suit someone with normal, dry or normal to dry combination skin best. This is not to say that people who have oily or oily combination skin can not use this. They just have to set it with a good anti shine loose powder though.
Pros:
1.Full coverage.
2.Easily available.
3.Very diverse color chart (i am very impressed with the color range)
4.Best suited to dry , normal, normal to dry skin.
5.Price: under Pkr 1000.
6. 25g of product
7. Lasts for hours on the face.
8. Matte finish (if you like that)
Cons:
1. Full coverage (if you don't want to cover it all then this is not for you)
2.Matte finish (nothing dewy about it)
3.Have to be careful blending it as it may appear cakey on face if not blended properly(use a damp sponge)

Jolen Bleach cream is my go to product for my face.I have been using it since i was in school.I have tried a bunch of other brands as well. Some Pakistani , some foreign but apart from one by WELLA(which is discontinued now) i have never been totally satisfied.
It is easy to mix.I keep it on for 25-30 min.It all depends on how pigmented the hair is i guess.
When you use it for the first few times , it does burn a bit(quite a bit) but you get used to it.
I strongly suggest every first time user to do an allergy test before applying it all over your face.Just apply it on a small area on your arm to see if there is an adverse reaction.
There are two types available in local market,(at least that is what the shopkepper tells me every time i go to buy it.)One is the Pakistani version and one is the genuine product.
If you love your skin,DONT buy the Pakistani version. It may be cheaper(a lot cheaper) than the real deal but its very low quality and if you want to buy a cheaper product than at least go for a Pakistani brand like OLIVIA for e.g.
The cost of the product is anywhere from 200-270 Rs.Depends where are you buying it from.
Like any bleaching product, this too is not totally without side effect.Bleach has been linked to skin cancer(i have heard. Not really baseing it on any scientific proof or anything).I use it once a month or sometimes even once every two months.
Comes with
CREME 1oz(28g)
ACCELERATOR 1/4thoz(7g)
NET WT: 10oz
CREME contains:water,Hydrogen peroxide,Glyceryl Stearate,Isopropyl myristate,Stearyl stearate,Propylene glycol,Stearic acidStearamidopropyl dimethylamine,Phosphoric acid,
ACCELERATOR contains: Ammonium bicarbonate
Made in USA.
Till next time....

I am a big fan of tinted moisturizers and bb creams. The idea of not having to wear a full coverage foundation on a daily basis is really appealing to me.I just feel that for people who don't want to wear a full face of makeup every day , bb creams are a God send.
This is my second bb cream from Maybelline.I have been using their "Clear smooth minerals" bb cream
and i absolutely love it.This one claims to be:
"The 1-step wonder for a good skin day, everyday.Packed with 8 great skin benefits for instant skin perfection."
The cream it self comes in a plastic tube, which contains 30ml/1 fl oz of product. This bb cream also boosts an SPF 30 with titanium dioxide as part of its ingredients. The product claims to be an "8 in 1 Beauty Balm skin perfecter".
My Thoughts:
The bb cream comes in five shades, ranging from "Light 100, Light/medium110,Medium120, Medium/deep130 to Deep140. I have it in "Light / Medium". I have been using it for a month now and it hasn't broken me out.The cream has more of a lotion consistency. It is not oily at all.I cant really say how it would be in the summer months but in this weather it completely absorbs in the skin with out leaving any oily feeling behind. The coverage is very sheer. On the tube it says "sheer tint" and that describes the end result of this product to a hilt. You will have to use a concealer over it to hide pigmentation etc.At most this will even out your skin tone but don't go expecting it to provide any kind of coverage. The product is scent free and has SPF so that is always a plus.
This bb cream carries a rating of 3.5/5.0 at Makeupalley.com . And if you refer to buy online, it costs around 7-8 $.

Dry shampoo is a summer staple, a must-have if you travel, and a lifesaver in all the worst hair situations.
Ever since I wrote How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?, I’ve received tons of emails and some comments wanting dry shampoo recommendations. Over the past few months, I’ve been on a quest to test them all out, and have finally decided on my top 5 favorites.
What is dry
shampoo?
For those of you who don’t know, dry shampoo is a powder, usually in a spray can, that absorbs oil in your hair and leaves a fresh scent. It gets rid of greasy “second day” hair, adds volume, and makes hair look and smell fresh and clean, minus the need for water.
Why use dry shampoo?
There are a so many reasons why dry shampoo is amazing. First of all, if you’re blonde, dry shampoo is the best for getting rid of greasy hair and even lightening up your roots! Second, it’s perfect if you have damaged hair that you don’t want to shampoo every day. Daily shampooing, blow drying, and styling can stress your hair even more, causing extra damage and breakage. By shampooing only 3-4 times a week and using dry shampoo in between washings, your hair will be less damaged and prone to breakage. Third, it’s perfect if you travel or just wake up late and need to get ready fast. A quick spray and your hair will be good to go, no shower necessary.
The Top 5 Dry Shampoos
* Cheapest option: Batiste Dry Shampoo
Batiste Dry Shampoo
Don’t let the low-budget packaging fool you – this stuff is as good now as it probably was in the 80′s when they designed the label. Batiste Dry Shampoo comes in a bunch of scents, but I only tried Original and “Blush”. Original smells clean, lemony, and a little bit chemically, but once it’s on your hair the scent disappears. Blush smells powdery and floral, but not too overpowering. At only $5.99/can at Sally’s, Batiste is a budget-friendly dry shampoo that works well.
You can buy Batiste Dry Shampoo for $5.99 at Sally Beauty Supply.
* Best scent: Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo
Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo
I’m in LOVE with the lemony scent of this dry shampoo! It’s definitely pricey, at $11 for a tiny bottle, but pricey is what you have to expect with Oscar Blandi. As far as results go, this worked just as well as the cheaper brands at eliminating oil and leaving hair looking fresh. If you only plan to use dry shampoo once in a while and want to splurge on something that smells amazing, you have to try Oscar Blandi.
You can buy Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo for $11 at Sephora.com.
* Most fun: Lush Candy Fluff powder
Lush candy fluff
This product isn’t technically labeled as a dry shampoo, but it works well as one. Candy Fluff powder contains a mix of cornstarch, talc, and gold sparkles, and smells super sweet, kinda like red swedish fish. You can use it as a shimmer powder for your body, or in your hair as a dry shampoo. Since it’s not in a spray can, it can definitely be a little messy to apply.
You can buy Candy Fluff powder for $11.25 at Lush.
* DIY version: Baby Powder
Baby Powder
If you don’t want to shell out the money for a dry shampoo, and want to use something you might have around the house, you can use baby powder instead. Just sprinkle some baby powder on your roots, turn your head upside down, and brush it out, and your hair will look and smell nice and fresh. If you can’t stand the baby powder scent, you can always buy unscented powder which works just as well.
* Best overall: Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo
Klorane Dry Shampoo
Klorane Dry Shampoo was my favorite of all the ones I tried. It’s definitely pricey and hard to find in stores, but it’s worth it for the scent, the fact that it’s natural, and how well it works. It makes hair look clean and fresh, but doesn’t build up or make hair look dull the way other dry shampoos can. Klorane is also great because it’s natural and contains fewer toxic ingredients than other products on the market. It’s also perfect for darker hair, as it doesn’t leave any white residue. Highly recommended!
You can buy Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo for $18 at Ulta.
Your thoughts?
You’ve seen my favorite dry shampoos, now I want to hear your recommendations. Do you use dry shampoo? If so, let me know which dry shampoo is your favorite in the comments section!

Summer is officially in full swing and with it comes cute shorts, hot weather and hopefully some time spent at the nearest pool, beach or lake. However, all that summer fun can unfortunately give our skin and hair a beating. Beauty treatments from spas can help, but usually cost a lot of money, which isn’t ideal for most college students.
That’s why I compiled a list of some do-it-yourself
beauty treatments that can keep you looking your best all summer long. The best part? They’re inexpensive and all-natural.
Face
It’s important to stick with a strict skin routine- even during the summer. I recommend using a mask once a week to revitalize the skin. There are tons of recipes out there for DIY facials, but my favorite involves combining one egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt and 1/2 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil. Just leave the mixture on your face for 10 minutes and rinse it off. It’s a great mask for most skin types.
For oily or acne-prone skin, try a mask that will help soothe the skin. Take one ripe banana and blend it with 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Leave on for 15 minutes.
If you have dry skin, mix half of a mashed avocado with 1/4 cup of honey for a mask that will add tons of moisture to your face. Leave on for 10 minutes.
Sliced strawberries, grapes and cucumbers act as natural toners to tighten skin and shrink pores. Just rub the slices over your skin after cleansing. Oily skin? Try sliced lemons to reduce shine.
For a simple exfoliator, blend together 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1/2 cup of sugar. This is a perfect scrub for the face because it gets rid of dead skin cells and re-hydrates the skin at the same time. You should use this 1 to 3 times a week depending on how sensitive your skin is.
Body
Have some milk in your fridge that’s about to expire? Add it to a bath along with a few drops of extra virgin olive oil. Milk is a natural moisturizer that can do wonders for your skin and the olive oil will make skin super soft. You can also add the milk/olive oil combo in a bowl with warm water to soak your hands or feet before giving yourself a DIY manicure or pedicure.
Exfoliating is important, especially if you want to try a self-tanner this summer. You can use the same sugar scrub from above on your whole body, but if you want something different try a salt scrub. Combine 1 cup of salt with 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil. Add a few drops of an essential oil in your favorite scent or get creative by adding the zest of an orange or lemon for a fresh and citrus-infused smell.
Although we’re big advocates of sunscreen here at CF, sometimes the inevitable happens: the dreaded sunburn. While aloe gels and lotions can be a lifesaver, they’re are more natural ways to relieve a sunburn. You could buy the real deal- an aloe plant- or add a tablespoon of baking soda into a quart of cool water. If you want to try the latter, just use a washcloth to apply it to the sunburned areas. Also, you can help prevent peeling by applying vinegar to the skin.
Hair
For an easy and natural deep conditioner, blend 1/4 cup of plain yogurt, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise and the whites from one egg. Cover your hair with the mixture (run a wide tooth comb through your hair to make sure it’s evenly dispersed) and leave in for 30 minutes before rinsing it out. This will reverse dry and damaged hair.
Get rid of product build-up by mixing a small amount of baking soda in with your shampoo. This will clarify your hair and can make it more manageable over time.
Want to lighten up your hair but don’t have the money for highlights? Dilute 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice with 1/4 cup of water. Put the mixture in your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour. If you can, sit outside in the sun to help lighten the hair- but don’t forget the SPF! Are red tones more your style? Do the same thing, but use apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice.
What do you think?
Are you a fan of DIY beauty? Do you want to try any of these beauty treatments? Do you have a favorite DIY treatment that isn’t here? Let us know and be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts!

It’s that taxing in-between time of the semester again – spring break is over, papers and projects are coming due, and finals are looming ahead. It’s clear that college students are stressed right now, and with that stress comes the need for relaxation. And what better way to unwind than by pampering yourself and indulging in some me-time?
Of course, as college students, we can’t all
afford to shell out for a trip to a high-end spa. So how do you get all the benefits of a spa treatment without the hefty cost? Easy. Raid your kitchen! Here are three of my favorite do-it-yourself beauty treatments that are easy (and fairly cheap) to whip together in your dorm room or apartment.
1. The Olive Oil Hair Treatment
Dish full of olive oil
Olive oil isn’t just for cooking — it’s great for your hair, too! Olive oil has been proven to give hair a healthy sheen, help to repair split ends, and reduce frizz.
To give your hair a conditioning treatment, massage about 2 tablespoons of olive oil into your hair and scalp. The amount you’ll use should vary depending on the length and thickness of your hair. And remember to massage it in well – the massaging feels really nice on your scalp, but is also important to the treatment, as massage stimulates helps promote a healthy scalp.
Next, take a warm, damp towel and wrap it around your head and treated hair (“turban” it). Leave it on for about 30-45 minutes. This allows the olive oil to work into your hair to have the full effect.
Finally, rinse out the olive oil with shampoo. This might take a few shampoo-ings (when I tried it, it took 2 rounds.) Give your hair further rest by allowing it to air dry, if you have the time. Then say hello to your luscious locks!
2. The Miracle Mask
Facial
This DIY mask, made of nutmeg, honey, and cinnamon, is calming and soothing for stressed-out skin – in addition, it smells absolutely amazing!
The secret? Nutmeg and honey act as natural anti-inflammatories, which can reduce swelling and redness in skin. They’re also great for soothing acne scars and preventing infection. In addition, the nutmeg and cinnamon also work to exfoliate your skin when you wash this mask off.
Before you begin, it’s always a good idea to do a small test with homemade mixes on your skin to make sure you don’t have a bad reaction to any ingredients. So remember to do a quick patch test on sensitive skin, like that on the inside of your wrist, before applying this mask to your face.
To create the mask, mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg. The consistency should be like a thick paste. After it’s all mixed, apply the mask to your face and let it sit for 30 minutes. Wash it off with warm water, scrubbing softly in circular motion for exfoliation.
3. Brown Sugar Body Scrub
Brown sugar
One of my favorite DIY beauty treatments is this brown sugar body scrub, found on The Frugal Style. It’s the perfect way to get rid of dry winter skin, as well as prep your body for any sunless tanner you may be applying.
To create the scrub, just mix together half a cup of coarse brown sugar with a tablespoon of honey, a little olive oil, and 1/4 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, then apply all over your body and rinse. The scrub not only smells delicious, but leaves your skin feeling ultra-smooth.
Your Thoughts?
What do you think of DIY beauty treatments? Do you have a particular recipe that’s your favorite? What have you tried? Does DIY save you money? Make sure to leave a comment – can’t wait to hear your DIY spa tips!
