My hair has always been DARK brown to a point where people think I dye my hair black. I've never died my hair before or done anything to it besides cut it and recently, I got it deep conditioned at the Toni&Guy Academy.

How would I be able to subtly lighten my hair? What should I ask for? What color do I ask for, light brown or medium brown? I only want it to be a little bit lighter, just a normal brown. Do I highlight it? I'm getting it done at the Toni&Guy Academy too.

I desperately need help ):

Tell them auburn brown they will know what dye to mix. Or whatever color you want, I think auburn brown is the prettiest :)

heyy.. so you can do a few things to lighten it or change your color.
since your getting it done you can just ask them for a few shades lighter and they'll know what to do. just explain what you want and how you've never dyed your hair before. you can even bring in the picture you posted to help as a reference.

(do it yourself stuff.... in case you decide to not get it done professionally)
for me, i originally have darkest of dark hair as well. so i've used drugstore dying kids [the box ones] and you can pick your color there. you can pick the blondest color and you'll only come up with different shades of brown and with a coppery tint unfortunately. so you can either: bleach your hair using bleaching formulas or lightening powders to lighten it to your liking and then dye it to whatever color your like. OR you can just get a hair dye a shade or two lighter than what you're looking for. there's always a chart on the box saying what color your hair type will turn, but i know i have stubborn, dark hair so it may not always turn out the way it says it will.
there's different washes you can purchase to help with the coppery tint that comes along with lightening dark hair.
also, look into a good conditioner for dyed hair or for restoration. (most dyes nowadays are pretty healthy for your hair though.)

I color my hair all the time, I would put blonde highlights in it and make it different shades of dark hair.
