On, June 13, 2011, Constance White, the newest editor-in chief of Essence Magazine was honored in New York City at the Bryant Park Hotel. In celebration for the third annual Juneteenth event, the Fashion Art Xchange presented a fashion show showcasing 4 up and coming designers and to honor Constance White celebrating her contribution to the fashion and arts world. As many know, Essence is an iconic publication that has been for over 40 years now. It is the premiere magazine for the World’s beautiful black woman.
The Fashion Art Xchange also known as FAX was founded by Gwen Sargeant in 1994 was created to provide a networking exchange for people of color in fashion and the arts. This includes retail, design, and anyone working within these industries. The organization also provides seminar, educational opportunities and scholarships for deserving students. With events put together throughout the year, the celebration around Juneteenth is one of the most important.
As many people may know, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated event commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. For the past 3 years, the Fashion Arts Xchange has honored some of the fashion elite during their annual Juneteenth celebration.
To help make this years event a successful, many talented people lent their expertise such as Tai Chunn and MVC Production Team who handled the front of house seating rather smoothly as we entered the theater. There was delicious buffet from Soul Fixins and dessert from Cake Bliss.
The night ended Constance White accepting her award and giving a speech thanking FAX for being recognized. She challenged the audience to continue to succeed, and to continue to make a pathway for all who come afterwards. Those words are truly a testament as to what Juneteenth really means to us even today.
